The Essential Storage Guide

Storage Unit Size Selection

To get the most out of your storage cost, choose your storage unit size properly. We have a guide to help you pick.

Stackability

Use of quality totes and sturdy cardboard boxes of the same size that stack well is an easy way to vertically fill the space safely.

Label Everything

When packing items into boxes or totes, it is a great idea to label each one on multiple sides so you can retrieve something if needed.

Accessibility of the Items

One common mistake customers make is placing items in the back of the unit that they may need, leaving them inaccessible without substantial effort. Leave totes with important documents, or items you may sell, near the front for easier access.

Sofas and Chairs

Plan your placement of these items carefully. Generally along the wall, and probably in the back of the unit is ideal. Save space by standing on end, or stack items on top with cushions removed. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic.

Mattresses and Box Springs

To protect the structural integrity of the mattress, store against the wall with the box spring pressed against it. Both should be wrapped in plastic. A mattress that is bent or arced in storage will generally lose its shape.

Weight Distribution

When stacking boxes, place the heavier boxes or totes on the bottom, getting lighter as you go up. This will ensure stability.

Protect from Moisture

Concrete floors are awesome, but they do become cold and damp. Use of pallets or 2x4 boards to keep wood and paper off of the ground is advised. It is also recommended to place a tarp down before moving in.

Inventory Your Items

Some customers keep a list of items that are in their units for reference. That list, tied to labeled containers, makes accessing items easy if needed.

Fill Empty Spaces

Most furniture items will have spaces, which can be filled with boxes and smaller items. Drawers of dressers, for example, are excellent places to store smaller, fragile items.

Flatware and Stemware

Your plates, glasses, and other cooking items should be wrapped in paper and stored in sturdy boxes or totes to protect them, as well as marked as being "Fragile" clearly and on all sides.
